Causes of Dry Eye

Dry eye occurs due to insufficient production of aqueous tears, or when the tears produced evaporate too quickly. Dry eyes are more commonly experienced by:

  • Contact lens wearers
  • Those working in air-conditioned environments
  • Those who have heavy computer usage

Signs and symptoms:

  • Pain and redness of the eye
  • Stinging or burning sensation of the eye
  • A sandy or gritty feeling
  • Temporary blurred vision
  • Discomfort during contact lens wear
  • Excessive tearing

Main Causes:

  • Insufficient tears
  • Dry, dusty & windy conditions
  • Excessive use of computers and handphones
  • Aging
  • Underlying systemic diseases
  • Certain medications (antihistamines, birth control pills etc)

Dry eyes are usually caused by Meibomian Glands Dysfunction (MGD) and Blepharitis.
